About the University


 

    Founded in 1946, the University was originally the State Pedagogical College – Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Pedagogiczna - dedicated to providing education and training for future teachers. Since then the University has developed into one of the country’s top teacher-training centres, and has played a leading role in the development of modern higher education in Poland.

On the motion of the act from 1 October, 1999 the University was granted a new name:

 

Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny im. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w Krakowie.

    It refers to the best educational traditions started in Poland by the famous National Education Commission – the first Ministry of Education in Europe, established in 1773. Nowadays, the University continues to live up to those traditions and achievements with major developments in areas as diverse as:

                    within the Faculty of Humanities                    

Fine Arts Education; Pedagogy / Education; Preschool and Young Learners Education; Revalidation / Special Education

                    within the Faculty of Education 

                    within the Faculty of Natural Sciences 

                    within the Faculty of Science

 

   Our University offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees.

Currently, there are over 13,000 students in both undergraduate and graduate studies, taking courses: full-time, part-time, extramural, extension, and evening classes.

Over the past years, the University has educated more then 40,000 teachers, most of whom have taken up jobs in various schools and educational institutions of the country. The University is also widely recognized for its leading-edge research which is of considerable importance for the development of science in Poland as well as known and highly valued abroad.

    Bearing in mind that teacher training in Poland is in constant transition, the University, from its very beginning, has been vividly participating in the process of reforming and reshaping the educational system. It is well know for its commitment to innovation in training and teaching. Its aim is to deliver excellent teaching and research in context of continuing development within an organization, which is effective, efficient and accountable.
