Uri Orlev

Born in Warsaw, 1931 as Jerzy Henryk Or³owski.

Survived the Warsaw ghetto and the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

As a war orphan, sent to a kibbutz in the Palestine.

Published his first book in Hebrew in 1956 (English edition 1979).

Awards:

  • Hans Christian Andersen Author Award (1996)
  • Yad Vashem Bruno Brandt Award (1997)
  • Ze’ev Prize for his life-work (2002)
  • Italian Andersen Award (2003)
  • Italian Premio Cento Prize (2003)
  • Nominated for the 2005 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
